Product Details

Penstemon was an unexpected surprise for us. We didn't think too much of it, but had heard of its good reputation as a cut flower and that it was a native so we had to give it a whirl. It totally caught us off guard as we all fell completely in love with it. The flowers are gorgeous and delicate but the foliage also has amazing eye appeal in the garden. It's leaves are thick and deep burgundy, almost black with a beautiful sheen to them. Plus the contrast of it's rich, lavender purple flowers against the burgundy foliage makes for a stunning color combo. It's also vigorous and easy to grow, can even handle hot dry sites, so can't really go wrong with this one! Prefers full sun but can handle part shade. Does not like clay soil.

Description from North Creek Nurseries: Penstemon digitalis supports dozens of native bees and pollinators including long-tongued bees as well as Halictid bees, moths, butterflies, and hummingbirds. The foliage supports at least three different larval stages of moths and the foliage is generally unattractive to mammalian herbivory. For best foliage coloring, situate in full sun.
